Veganism and The Environment

We’re no stranger to shocking statistics related to meat production and the environment. We’ve reported on studies warning ‘Eat Less Meat to Prevent Climate Disaster‘ and organizations recommending lowering meat and dairy consumption to preserve the Earth’s biodiversity and enhance sustainability.

But the infographic below from CulinarySchools.org really nails it, providing a nice summary of just how wasteful meat production really is. Just a few of the startling statistics:

  • Going vegan brings greater environmental benefits than buying a hybrid vehicle or eschewing showers for 6 months.

  • It takes 2,400 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat.

  • Raising animals for food uses 30 percent of the Earth’s land mass – or an area about the size of Asia.

  • 7 football fields of land are bulldozed every minute to create more room for farmed animals.
